Derick grew up in Point Leamington, NL, and graduated high school in Grand Falls-Windsor. After studying business at Memorial University of Newfoundland, he returned to central Newfoundland and worked in the family business founded by his great-grandfather in 1916. To this day, Derick is the president of that business, which has continued for 103 years in retail and at one point employed over 150 people. In 1993, Derick entered full-time ministry and became an ordained minister. After 16 years of ministry in Phoenix, Arizona, and Jacksonville, Florida, he and his family returned to St John’s to continue in ministry until 2018. He and his wife Annette have been married for 43 years and have 2 children, Sarah and Philip, and 5 grandchildren. Derrick has been a supporter and advocate for mental health for over 20 years, and since 2012 he has served as a volunteer chaplain for Eastern Health in local hospitals. He has also had the honour of serving on the board of Habitat for Humanity Newfoundland and Labrador, providing affordable housing to lower income working families.
